Week 1 Wrap-Up: Lake Park Lancer Joust

Last week the Marching Mustangs stepped off in fine fashion to begin the season. They started the day in the fog at Cypress Cove to kick off the Bike & Hike for Mike, then moved to DGS for practice before boarding the buses for Lake Park. The band unveiled this year's show with a great performance in the preliminary round against some very stiff competition. The Mustangs earned a score of 64.80, a tie for 7th Place, and a spot in the Finals Competition Round for the first time in many years. In Finals, the band received a score of 63.95 and improved to 6th Place Overall. Congratulations to the Directors, Staff and all the Marching Mustangs on a great start to this year's competition season.

Bike & Hike for Mike

From Cathy Jama, Band Booster President

This year the entire Marching Band will be performing on Saturday morning for the annual Bike & Hike for Mike fundraiser. Michael Samel was a percussionist at DGS when his life was cut short by a fatal car accident on October 6, 2001. The Michael David Samel Spirit of Music Fund provides memorial gifts and scholarship programs for high school youths who are active in music. Michel's parents, Mark and Pat Samel, have been avid supporters of the DGS Music Program and have been very generous over the years to the band program and our students. Let's show them our support in return for what they do in memory of their son, Michael David Samel.

Since the Marching Band has a performance this year that conflicts with the remainder of the day, every Marching Band member may still obtain pledges and participate by "Marching for Mike".
